In Africa, Wagner may stay more or less intact under new management or be subsumed by another Russian mercenary group. 'REPLACE A DEAD LEADER'After the June mutiny, Prigozhin intensified his efforts to bolster Wagner's presence in Africa. In countries where Wagner operates through an official agreement with Moscow, analysts do not expect much to change - for now. But as Wagner was there through a state-level agreement with Russia, "nothing will affect the presence of these instructors" he said.

BANGUI, July 30 (Reuters) - Central African Republic is voting on a constitutional referendum on Sunday which, if it passes, could remove a presidential term limit and allow President Faustin-Archange Touadera to run for a third term in 2025. Touadera was first elected in 2016 for a five-year term and won reelection in 2020 for what was supposed to be his final term in office. Opposition parties and some civil society groups have called for a boycott of the referendum, saying it was designed to keep Touadera in power for life. A senior CAR military official in the capital told Reuters that hundreds of troops had arrived. BANGUI, July 8 (Reuters) - The departure of hundreds of Russian Wagner troops from Central African Republic is part of a rotation of forces rather a withdrawal, a spokesperson for the CAR presidency said on Saturday. But CAR presidential spokesperson Albert Yaloke Mokpem said "it is not a definitive departure but a rotation." Several hundred Wagner troops have recently left the country, a military source told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity and without giving further details. Any restructuring of Wagner operations in CAR could have substantial commercial ramifications. Analysts have said Wagner received logging rights and control of a gold mine in CAR.

A suspension of Wagner operations in Africa could impact the group's finances. The group has cemented strong ties with several African governments over the past decade with operations in at least eight African nations, according to leaked U.S. documents, including Mali, Central African Republic, and Libya.

BANGUI, May 30 (Reuters) - Central African Republic's President Faustin-Archange Touadera said on Tuesday he would hold a referendum in July on his intention to change the constitution and remove term limits. Touadera's allies proposed the change in May last year, arguing that presidential term limits were uncommon in many neighbouring countries. Critics and opposition parties held protests last year as the reform would allow Touadera to run again in 2025 for a third term. A presidential decree issued later on Tuesday said the referendum would start on July 15 and end on July 28. The proposed reform echoes constitutional and other legal changes that have allowed presidents in several other African countries - including Rwanda, Congo Republic, Ivory Coast and Guinea - to stay in office.
